The IRS has notified tax-exempt organizations that the Modernized eFile (MeF) system will not be available from January 1, 2012 through February 29, 2012 for electronic filing of Form 990, Form 990-EZ, Form 990-PF, or Form 1120-PL.  The notice provides for an automatic extension until March 30, 2012 unless the 990 return has already been extended twice.  For those 990′s with final dates of Janary 17, 2012 or February 15, 2012, relief from late filing penalties will be granted if the return is e-filed by March 30, 2012.
