2010 Internship Testimonials

“Receiving the opportunity to
intern with DOZ during a
busy season is like winning
the career lottery! Those
three months will greatly
impact the rest of your
life. Throughout my
internship with DOZ, I
worked on audits,
compilations, and cost
certifications, many from
start to finish. This was
my third internship and I
can assure you, this firm
has the best internship
program out there! As an
intern, I was able to work
with all levels of staff
(from Interns to Partners).
Also, toward the end of the
internship, I was given the
opportunity to further my
management skills by leading
a team. In addition to
working on average 60 hours
per week, you will be given
the opportunity to
participate in the Saturday
Olympics, attend the end of
busy season party, and cheer
on your peers in the Staff
vs. Interns basketball
game. Dauby O’Connor &
Zaleski, LLC really does
live up to their “Work Hard,
Play Hard” motto!“

“
Coming to DOZ as an intern was
scary. It was far from home,
far from friends, and more
importantly, the real world!
For nearly seventeen years I had
been in a classroom; I didn’t
have a clue what to expect from
my leap into the actual
profession. What I found was
comforting, though. You’re not
expected to know everything on
your first day. That’s what the
staff at DOZ are for! I didn’t
work with anyone who didn’t want
to help me understand what I was
doing. That’s the thing about
DOZ. I not only learned the
“hows” of auditing, I learned
the “whys” as well. That was
important to me. This
internship has the ability to
take you far beyond what the
classroom offers. I think I’ve
learned and accomplished more at
DOZ than I would’ve had I
interned elsewhere this busy
season. No regrets!”

"The thing that clearly sets DOZ
apart is the atmosphere that it
provides to the employees. The
people are great to work with
and offer unlimited help, as
well as a wealth of knowledge.
The motivational committee sure
does their job, and there is not
a day that goes by that I do not
enjoy. I would highly suggest
considering a spring internship
at DOZ to anyone that is having
doubts about going away from the
summer internship norm. There is
simply more to do during busy
season, and therefore it
provides for a much better
experience. I honestly believe I
may have learned more during
this internship than all of my
accounting classes in aggregate.
The fact that DOZ is completely
paperless has also appealed to
me, as I assume it would to many
other younger individuals.
Working with a laptop with two
additional LCD monitors makes
sorting through work papers so
much easier, and accounting in
general a lot more enjoyable
than what I pictured from
courses at IU. I really can’t
imagine another place that I’d
rather work 60 hours a week."

“The
DOZ internship solidified my
desire to become a CPA. I left a
Fortune 100 company to work for
DOZ, and I couldn’t have made a
better decision. After one week
of training, I was given the
responsibility and treatment of
a first-year staff accountant,
performing full audits and
writing the audit reports. I
gained invaluable knowledge of
the residential real estate
market on both the management
and development sides. I was
evaluated by both seniors and
managers, and I always knew what
was expected of me from client
to client. I was fortunate to
travel to North Carolina on two
different engagements, and spoke
with my clients directly in my
audit work. And the office
atmosphere? “Work hard, play
hard” is the motto. During one
Saturday event, I won a
cracker-eating competition, then
returned to my desk to finish
writing an audit report. That
said, I think you will find a
compelling balance at DOZ. I
found the satisfaction of
completing professional
engagements while having fun
each day. I don’t believe the
public accounting industry
offers any greater experience
than what you will find at DOZ.”

“Accepting
a Spring Internship with DOZ was
one of the best decisions I have
made thus far in my career. I
was amazed at my ability to
adapt to the quick learning pace
and how easy DOZ made it to
understand the auditing process.
Working on complete audits from
start to finish has given me
insight into the public accounting
arena that I don’t think I would
gain from internships with other
firms. Not only did the
structure of the DOZ internship
allow me to apply my basic
knowledge from my education to
real world engagements, but the
experience and the feedback
provided has given me confidence
in my own abilities. I was
entrusted with real
responsibility from day one of
my internship, and I felt like
my work was making a difference
at the firm, just as an intern!
The work load is demanding, but
the benefits and wonderful
people at the firm make it all
worthwhile.”

“Accepting the spring internship
offer from DOZ was one of the
best things I have done for my
career. They say that you
cannot become fluent in a
foreign language until you are
immersed in the culture; I have
found the same to be true with
accounting. My college courses
provided me with the basics
(debits have to equal credits
and Assets equal Liabilities
plus Equity), but it was not
until halfway through my DOZ
internship that I began truly
understanding the application of
these basic accounting
principles. I won’t lie, the
first few weeks are rather
intimidating. However, the
staff at DOZ was very helpful in
teaching me, not only what I
need to do, but why it needed to
be done. Once I understood why
I had to perform certain steps,
the entire process seemed much
less foreign, and I became more
confident in my actions.
DOZ is an ever-growing firm, yet
retains a close-knit quality.
The staff is extremely helpful,
friendly, and fun-loving. Every
Saturday, throughout my
internship, the firm hosted an
“Office Olympics” event in which
anyone could participate. This
just goes to show you the “work
hard, play hard” mentality at
DOZ. The size of the firm also
allows for flexibility and
variety in scheduling. Often
times, at larger firms, you may
be stuck on the same project for
months at a time, limiting your
chances for new and unique
experiences. While that is also
an option at DOZ, it is more
prevalent for interns to only be
on a project for a few weeks at
a time. I found this to be one
of the best things about the
internship, as I got the
opportunity to see how numerous
different companies performed
their respective accounting
functions. I would definitely
recommend interning at DOZ to
anyone who gets the opportunity
to do so. Not only for the
knowledge and career references
gained, but for the dynamic
atmosphere you’ll experience
throughout your time at DOZ (and
the compensation doesn’t hurt
either).”

“Deciding
to intern at DOZ was a great
decision. I have learned so much
from this experience, and it was
very beneficial to take a
semester off of school. The DOZ
approach to the internship
process is what any intern would
want. I was able to complete
over 150 tax returns throughout
my internship. The most valuable
factor to me was actually doing
the returns every day. This
provided me with incredible
knowledge about the industry and
gave me reassurance about my
career path. I highly recommend
this to anyone who is looking
for an internship“

“My internship with DOZ has
exceeded my expectations without
a doubt. One thing that sets
DOZ apart is the amount of
responsibility given to their
interns. From the first week of
my internship, I was responsible
for completing my own audits and
was truly treated as full-time
staff member – not many interns
at other firms could say the
same thing! Throughout my
internship, DOZ recognized my
hard work and made sure I knew
that the work I completed was a
major value to the company. The
frequent evaluations allowed me
the opportunity to recognize
where I was excelling and where
I still needed improvement.
Looking back on the past few
months, I can say that DOZ was
overall, a great experience.
However, making the transition
from a college atmosphere to the
real world was tough at times.
Busy season requires a lot of
hours and hard work, but the
payoff is definitely worth it.
I strongly suggest anyone who is
looking for an internship in
Indianapolis take a closer look
at DOZ – you won’t regret it!“

“Having previously completed an
internship with a Big 4 firm, I
can say with full confidence
that DOZ offers the most
challenging, yet rewarding,
internship in town. DOZ gives
you full responsibility in your
very first week. You are
directly involved in completing
audits from start to finish and
in the preparation of the
financial statements. At the
other firm I interned with, I
felt like my contribution did
nothing to directly affect the
audit process. I found every
day at DOZ to be challenging,
but never overwhelming, as the
staff are fully willing to
assist with any questions and
offer constructive feedback and
encouragement. It’s great
working with people similar in
age who are friendly and
concerned with your personal
development. You have to be
extremely motivated to be
successful at DOZ as the
internship is intense. If you’re
ready to work hard and learn
more than you could ever imagine
in three months, then DOZ is for
you!"

“Over the past three months at DOZ, I have been blessed with
one of the greatest experiences
of my life. I came into this
not knowing what to expect or
even if this would be the right
career path for me, and before I
knew it, I was completing
multiple full audits in just one
week! The amount of work you
are able to complete during your
internship is amazing and gives
you a great sense of
accomplishment knowing that you
provided a key role from start
to finish, in providing the
client with their end report.
Even though the hours are long,
they seem to fly by when you are
working with the great people of
DOZ. The people and culture at
DOZ is second-to-none and is
evident from the moment you
first meet a DOZ employee. In
the short time here, I feel as
though not only have I learned a
great deal about life as a
public accountant but have also
built relationships with people
that will last for years to
come. Do not hesitate to make
the decision to intern at DOZ,
you won’t regret it.“

“DOZ’s internship provides an
opportunity to complete several
audits from start to finish,
including writing the report and
footnotes. The staff is
excellent at training, coaching,
and providing feedback for
interns throughout the
internship. Everyone is
friendly and welcoming, making
for an enjoyable work
environment. I can’t imagine
that any other internship could
provide as much knowledge and
experience as DOZ’s, and I feel
very fortunate that I had the
opportunity to take part in it.”

“When
considering all my options, I
was unsure if taking a semester
off of college was the best idea
for me. However, I am very glad
that I decided to because I
believe that it was the best
choice I have ever made.
Deciding that DOZ was the firm I
was to going to intern with was
even better. At DOZ, I have
learned more than I could ever
imagine. Nowhere else could I
have gained so much knowledge; I
have completed 36 full audits
and 28 reports/partial audits. I
have also met some great people
at DOZ, who are very
knowledgeable and have been
extremely helpful. The work
environment here is fun and
enjoyable. I feel like my
professional life has been
changed by this experience and
would not take any of it back.”

“Participating in the internship
at DOZ was one of my best
experiences! I learned more
about accounting and the
professional work environment in
three months than I ever did in
four years of school. The work
environment and staff were
wonderful and very supportive.
In three months, I had the
opportunity to participate in
almost every phase of the audit
process - - - from doing
fieldwork and testing, to
writing and reviewing reports. I
had the opportunity to travel to
clients, participate in weekly
games and activities, and make
several new friends. My only
regret is that I didn’t
participate in an internship
opportunity sooner. I think this
experience would have been a
great one to draw from during
several of my classes. Overall,
it was a great experience that
will last a lifetime!

“Working at DOZ provides
experience that I believe is
unparalleled in the realm of
spring accounting internships!
You work alongside full-time
staff who promise to give you a
very challenging work load.
Everyone here is very helpful,
so anytime you have a question,
there is someone to answer it.
At DOZ, the atmosphere makes
working hard enjoyable, and I
believe it is the people here
that make that possible. This
is my second year as an intern
here, and I would highly
recommend it to anyone.”

“I chose to complete the DOZ
internship for one reason- to
see if accounting was truly what
I wanted to do. After working
at DOZ during the most stressful
time of the year, I realize that
this is exactly what I want.
The people are great, the
atmosphere is great, and the
experience that I gained is as
valuable as you can get. It’s
truly amazing how everything you
learn in school comes together
during an audit of a client.
During the first two weeks of my
internship, I was already
completing audits, writing
financial statements, and
reviewing full audit reports.
If given the opportunity to
accept an internship offer here
at DOZ, I would definitely
encourage it. The experience
that you will gain will be one
you’ll never regret."

“I
set high expectations going into
the internship with DOZ and it
turned out to be exactly what I
wanted. I was looking for an
internship that would expose me
to the world of public
accounting, would give me on the
job experience that school
cannot, and would place me with
employees who are willing to
teach. All three of these
expectations were met and even
exceeded. DOZ gives their
interns the responsibility of
completing their own audits from
start to finish. There are
staff members that are assigned
to help you along the way, but
after several audits, you really
learn how to do it by yourself.
I wasn’t sure if taking a
semester off from school was the
right thing to do because
graduation was so close, but
after completing the internship,
I know I gained more valuable
resources than I would have in
classes. I have learned more
than I thought I would in just
three months and feel more
equipped for the rest of school
and for when I start working
full time.”

“DOZ creates a high-intensity
atmosphere that challenges their
interns to deliver at a
consistently high level. This
is a very effective motivator,
but not as effective as the
consistently helpful staff.
Each and every member of the DOZ
staff has gone out of their way
to welcome and guide us through
that wild, yearly experience
called… BUSY SEASON. Everyone
at DOZ wants you to succeed, and
they will expertly guide you
through each step of the way
until the audit or tax return is
finalized. You gain valuable
experience in putting together
the final package the client
receives, from the preliminary
gathering of information to
tying it all together and
readying it for submission. It
is the most valuable learning
experience being offered to an
intern staff, hands down, and it
is the most effective internship
program in the state. It builds
confidence, skill,
self-motivation, and belief in
your ability to deliver a
quality product. I feel
fortunate that I was given this
opportunity to work at DOZ. It
has been a great experience, and
I have gained a better
understanding of what public
accounting has to offer, but
even more… I have gained a
better understanding of what I
have to offer. Thanks to DOZ’s
mentoring, that’s huge, in many
ways.”

“Working at DOZ has been one
of the best experiences of
my life. Not only do I feel
like I accomplished
something during my
internship, but I also
learned a lot in doing so.
I couldn’t believe how much
the Firm trusted me to
complete full audits on my
own, after just the first
week! Everyone I met at DOZ
was extremely helpful and
friendly, especially when
the going got tough. There
was never a time when I felt
completely lost on an audit
because it was always so
easy to get help. I learned
so many things during my
internship that I could have
never learned in a classroom
setting. I was amazed at
how fast busy season flew
by. This is due to the
positive attitude that
surrounds DOZ and its
workers, combined with the
effective way the
internship is managed. This
was definitely an experience
I could not have found at
another firm.“

“I could not have imagined
receiving more from my DOZ
internship experience. In my
opinion, the best way to learn
is by doing, and at DOZ, interns
are given the opportunity to
complete full audits within the
first week of the internship.
The staff was extremely
friendly, helpful, and
supportive in teaching how to
put a quality audit work paper
package together. The
responsibility given to interns
provides us the opportunity to
have a real impact on the Firm,
and makes for an even more
rewarding experience. Overall,
my internship experience with
DOZ completely surpassed my
expectations. I learned more in
three months than I thought was
possible in a year at school.
This experience will undoubtedly
prove invaluable in my future
academic and career
aspirations.”

"My internship at DOZ has been
one of the most challenging
experiences of my life. I
learned more in the 14 weeks at
DOZ then I ever thought I could.
The real world application of
creating financial statements
and audit reports cannot be
matched in a college classroom.
I had no intention of taking an
internship before I graduated,
but decided to go through the
interview process to see what it
was like. After talking with the
DOZ interviewers, I decided that
taking an internship at DOZ
would be a great way to find out
if auditing was the right career
choice for me. The idea of
working for a smaller, more
casual firm appealed to me. The
atmosphere at DOZ is very upbeat
and positive. Working 65 hours a
week can be tiring, but having
good people around you that let
you know that you are all in it
together and want you to succeed
makes it alot easier. Although I
may not end up working for DOZ
after I graduate, I couldn’t be
happier that I accepted the
internship. If given the
opportunity to do it all over
again, I would still make the
same choice."

“The experience I had during my
internship at DOZ was amazing.
There was so much responsibility
handed to me from the first day
that it made me feel like I
really was an important part of
the team. I never thought that I
would be prepared for such an
intense job after one week of
training, but the staff led
great training sessions and were
willing to help whenever I
needed them. I was on one client
for a majority of my internship,
but the staff around me tried
their best to expose me to every
aspect of the auditing process
and the different types of
audits DOZ performs. The hours
were not as bad as I thought
they would be; the time went by
very quickly. The experience and
knowledge I gained were
definitely worth the long days
at the office. I have learned so
much throughout this internship
and DOZ has convinced me that
public accounting is the place I
want to be.”

“My internship experience at DOZ
was one of the most rewarding
experiences of my life. In my
three months as an intern, I
completed numerous audits from
the beginning phases through the
report writing process. When
you are given the responsibility
to complete an entire audit, it
really gives you a sense of
ownership once the final product
is created. As a college
student, I only knew accounting
through a textbook, but after
working at DOZ for three months,
I learned so much about the
accounting and auditing process
and its real life application.
Aside from the work itself, the
staff at DOZ is incredibly
helpful and welcoming. By
working for a number of
in-charges and managers, I truly
learned from a wide knowledge
base. Overall, the opportunity
that I was given at DOZ has been
incredible. It is a learning
experience like no other, and
the people and culture of DOZ
make the experience that much
better.”

“At first I was hesitant to take
a semester off from school to
complete an internship, but now
I can’t imagine never having had
this experience at DOZ. Working
at DOZ for the past three months
has made a large impact on the
way I see public accounting.
Although I did put in long
hours, I felt rewarded by how
much I learned and the
responsibility given to me. I
completed many audits from start
to finish and also had the
chance to work on cost
certifications. I really felt
that I was part of a team effort
and that my work was making a
difference. Everyone I worked
with was always friendly and
willing to lend a hand. We also
got a chance to relax and enjoy
hanging out with everyone at the
firm every Saturday during our
weekly events as well as on special
occasions such as the intern

would definitely recommend an
internship at DOZ to anyone
considering a career in
accounting."

“Working

experience for me. This
was the first internship that
allowed me to work on a project

It was a great opportunity to be
able to step out of the

rewarding experience. I
also appreciated the constant

“My internship at DOZ was
everything that I could have
ever asked for and more.
Interns are able to see all
stages of the audit process -
from completing the workpapers
to writing the report to

seeing the audit go out the

months than you could ever
imagine! Working long hours is

the experience all the more
enjoyable. I can’t imagine
